It is a metal Y-shaped object used to hold the wick in a lamp. It consists of a narrow, hollow cylinder and two thin straps on its upper part. The wick’s end would be placed inside the cylinder and the straps would be bent to fit over the lamp’s rim. This way the wick would stay upright in the centre of the vessel and not sink in the oil.
Glass lamps became widely common after the 5th cent. AD. However, their delicate and fragile walls made the use of such supports essential, since the flame of the wick had to be kept at a distance from the walls to ensure the integrity of the glass lighting vessel.
